These types of statements are ambiguous, as nothing in anyone else’s mind can be taken as a fact. What can be extracted from this?

An example of sales by word of mouth would be a personal experience relating to an event or an imparted understanding. John was originally scheduled to have an oil change only, but when he got his vehicle into the service department, he was given information on other defects in his vehicle that needed to be repaired in order to insure a safe vehicle. Knowing that the service station had an above average rating for customer satisfaction prompts John to recommend them to an associate, who then uses that station as their service provider the next time they needs their vehicle serviced. In that case, the service station would consider that to be a word of mouth transaction.

Keep in mind that add-on products and services provided are also residual profit from this original sale, as consumables are also used in part to service April's automobile. As illustrated above, you can see how increased sales via word of mouth can transfer to other areas, which is the main reason why companies would be wise to take heed of this and make plans accordingly.

It should be noted that most large, successful companies have at some time or another, usually at inception, relied solely on mouth sales to propel the business ahead – and those that grew this way are shown to have a longer life span, and the accompanying ability to weather economic storms, successfully.

The ability to gather ongoing word of mouth sales is a mixture of providing a very high quality product or service offered at a reasonable price, which then in turn translated into high consumer satisfaction on the value that they would have received for their money.

Sales by word of mouth is probably the most influential of all types of sales, for the simplest of reasons – people do not recommend bad products or services. Companies through time have been destroyed in this manner, so it is imperative that it is taken seriously.
